Hypothermia after cardiac arrest: beneficial, but slow to be adopted.

چکیده
Survivors of cardiac arrest due to ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation have improved neurologic outcomes if they are cooled to a core body temperature of 32°C to 34°C for 24 hours as soon as possible after reaching the hospital.

Protective hypothermia: An old therapy with a new prospective
UNLABELLED Therapeutic hypothermia (protective hypothermia) has been known to have beneficial effects since ancient times but interest was renewed after two land mark publication a decade ago. The survival as well as quality of life of post cardiac arrest patients depends on neurological outcome. Mild induced hypothermia is recommended for improving the neurological status of these patients. Al...
متن کاملSudden cardiac death: Role of therapeutic hypothermia
Permanent neurocognitive deficits due to cerebral sequelae account for the majority of longterm morbidity and mortality in survivors of cardiac arrest today. Albeit therapeutic hypothermia had been used as effective measure to ameliorate cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury during surgery for decades, it was not yet introduced into regular post-arrest care until 2003 due to significant side eff...
متن کاملTherapeutical hypothermia after cardiopulmonary resuscitation: evidences and practical issues.
Cardiac arrest survivors frequently suffer from ischemic brain injury associated with poor neurological outcome and death. Therapeutic hypothermia improves outcomes in comatose survivors after resuscitation from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Considering its formal recommendation as a therapy, post-return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest, the objective of this study was to revie...
متن کاملPredictors of adopting therapeutic hypothermia for post-cardiac arrest patients among Canadian emergency and critical care physicians.
Therapeutic hypothermia improves outcomes in resuscitated cardiac arrest patients, but prior application rates are less than 30%. We sought to evaluate self-reported physician adoption, predictors of adoption, and barriers to use among Canadian emergency and critical care physicians. A web-based modified Dillman questionnaire asked all physicians on the membership lists of the Canadian Associat...
متن کاملMild hypothermia treatment in patients resuscitated from non-shockable cardiac arrest.
OBJECTIVE Therapeutic hypothermia has proved effective in improving outcome in patients after cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation (VF). The benefit in patients with non-VF cardiac arrest is still not defined. METHODS This prospective observational study was conducted in a university hospital setting with historical controls. Between 2002 and 2010 387 consecutive patients have been ...
